Problem with my HIF4's

Hello Eveyone. I new to the forum so be kind....
I recently inherited a 74.5 Roadster from my cousin. Its in great condition expect it wasn't driven for 6 years. The problem I am havig is my carburator are leaking fuel. The mesh hose that runs to the emissions cannister was completly soaked and after running for around 10 minutes the fuel started flowing from the hose that exits the cannister that is open to atmosphere. The carbs were pretty gummed up and old so I decided to purchase a rebuilt set. Well I mounted those suckers up in Dec and everything was lookin smooth. Until, this past weekend I though I would start her up since the weather was warm. She turned right over and after about 15 minutes the same problem happend to the rebuilt set that happened to the old ones. The mesh hose exiting the carbs started to saturate and there was fuel flowing, rather heavily, from the cover on the underside of the front carb. I'm not sure what the idle rpm is for the car but I can tell you that the engine did sound a little fast. But the tach is busted so I couldn't get a true number. Anyway completely fed up I turned her off and covered her up. So before I try to tackle this again this weekend, does anyone have any ideas. I keep reading that the carbs need to be tuned expect im not to sure what I should do. Anyhow, any responses would be greatly appreciated.....sorry for the speeling. Its been a long day.

Welcome to the BCF Ray.....and don't worry, we are a kind bunch! It sounds as if you have a problem with the float bowl(s) sticking. Someone with more technical expertise than I possess will no doubt be along soon, so expect a more enlightened opinion.

I second Steve. It sounds like at least one of the needle valves in the float bowls is stuck open, or a float is out of adjustment. I would pull the bowls off and have a look.(this was easier on the older style carbs as the float bowls were seperate from the carbs)Any how, double check the action of the needles in the valves. Make sure they're installed right, operate freely, and don't have any debris stuck in them. Then double check the float settings. Usually a 7/16ths drill bit between the top of the float and the gasket surface with the needle valve colsed (carb upside down) but refer to your shop manual for specifics.
If all this is in order and the carbs are still overflowing then it's on to the next step.... Have a pint and think it over. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif

yea, I agree with Adam...since you have had the trouble with two sets of carbs, I would suspect the fuel pump has too much pressure and is pushing the floats. Stop at the auto parts store and pick up an in-line regulator to be sure.

and you mentioned the hose exposed to the atmosphere...do you mean the one that runs down underneath? If it is vented into the engine compartment and not below the body, you may either want to move it down where it belongs OR invest in a good fire extinguisher!

Oh....Wecome to the Forum /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

PS...don't throw away the old carbs...there is a market for them, even if they need rebuilt!

Ray-
Do you have a shop manual? I started out with a Clymers' and a Haynes, and I've had decent success with HIF issues.
I've seen some people use the, um, Bently manual?

There are lots of websites that are apecifically about tuning your carbs like here, or here also will give you some good ideas about what all needs to be done.

but save yourself a lot of aggrivation and get a book that has some troubleshooting guides in it.

oh, and welcome to the forum /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/computer.gif
