problem removing the flywheel bolts

I am trying to remove the four bolts that hold the geared flywheel assembly in place. Ive tried everything I can think of including impact wrench. How much torque is on it and how do I safely hold the engine from turning over while turning the bolts (if I ever get that far). I need access so I can put on a new oil seal. What size socket does it take?

HI TH, I don't remember exactly but it seems the socket size is 9/16". Have you removed the lock tabs on the bolts? by folding the edge down with a punch. If you use an impact wrench with 140 Ft.Lb at least you will not need anything to keep the engine from rotating. We have a special tool that bolts to the back plate and a dog that drops into the flywheel teeth to lock the engine in place, but generally that is not required. Torque on these bolts should not exceed 50 Ft.Lb--Keoke-??

Out of curiosity; what new oil seal are you putting on?
 
A cheap one from Ebay. I figure it was better than not having one at all. I didn't use that much pressure on the rench. Only about 100 lbs. with a 16mm socket. And there was not enough room for a cheater bar on the standard socket wrench. Plus the engine rotated with the standard wrenches. I'll try again this weekend. I am concerned about damaging the flywheel teeth.

Well IMOP cheep may look good now but if is not of standard design and does not seal you are faced with a /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif of a job to replace it.--Keoke- -----/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif--------------Do beat on them bolt heads good with that copper hammer it may help loosen them. Be sure and hang it back up on the wall afterwards though.-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif----Don't worry about the starter ring its strong enough to start the engine so its strong enough to hold it still.

Quality parts are worth their cost compared to re-doing the work when the cheaper ones fail or prematurely wear out....

Tahoe,

Use a long breaker bar and give it a single all at once impact (by hand or /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif). Consider spraying every day this week with rust breaker to get em soaking.

I find that one sharp blow of force will usually get these loose.

Yeah Anthony, I bet I put mine on them bolts they be glad to come loose. He may have an air wrench but not enough power from his compressor to really drive it??.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
I haven't put a lot of pressure into the impact wrench. Never needed to before. I'll goose it up and give it another try after some bolt loosening soaks.
If that don't work, what can I use to jam the flywheel to hold it while I try the wrench and cheater bar?
 
HI TH, well if you can get up to 110 or preferably 125 Lbs of pressure it should loosen the bolts.

But I would put a bit of that copper /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif to the heads to help persuade them to come loose.

To lock the fly wheel you will need to make a strong "L" shaped bracket that when bolted to one of the empty bell housing bolt holes will allow you to swing it down and engage the teeth on the flywheel. Then tighten it up securely.

"Do not use the hole located at the 11 o'clock position". Hope you get it off.---Keoke

Yeah ED,but not much good when bolts are tight and you are working alone. But its great for turning the engine when installing a clutch or during build up on the engine stand.--Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
 
Might try sprying the bolts every few hours with PB Blaster and letting it soak in over night, it works wonders!

Thanks, mjobrien, I've been doing that 2 to 3 times a day along with the copper hammer. I'll crank up the compressor this weekend and give it a go.
 
Sorry too late responding but for others in this pickle you can use a 2X4 wedged into the crank near the rear. But really they shouldn't be that tight.
