Hello, all. I've found a 1980 Spit w/30k miles and afraid I've been bitten by the bug. Not being much of a mechanic (though willing to learn!), I'm looking for info on mechanics in the Chicago area - preferably in the northwest burbs. Thanks!!

That's the one in Fond Du Lac, the pageant blue one, isn't it? Saw it on Craigslist............
 
Right on! Well, I still need to ID parking for my "main" car so I can park the Spit in the garage. Oh, right...and still need to get the wife to approve and find the money!

Welcome to the board anyway, you'll find plenty of help and advice here.

These cars are very easy to work on, and you'll have fun with it, too. Wish I could recommend someone in the Chicagoland area for you but though I am close, I'm not that close! I know some good guys in Milwaukee.....

~HERE~ are some Brit car specialists in your general area (although they are under an "MG link", I'm sure all of these places can fix Spitfires too).

A weak point in all Spitfire engines is worn "thrust washers" than can allow the crankshaft to move front-to-back excessively in the engine block. Analysing the problem is fairly simple and repair should not be too bad either. Please use the "Search" function here at BCF to find out more on this (it's been written about a lot here).

Also, rear axles and related parts can get loose with age. Again, not hard or expensive for a competant mechanic to fix.

Thanks for the link to the mechanics and the heads up on some key repair issues. However, these all seem to be found in Wisconsin. I'm still on a quest to locate someone in the Chicago area - hopefully in the northwest suburbs.

Yves is a racer and Rich loves old cars. They helped me with my Mini. Just a two man shop, so very personal attention and service.

Yep - chatted with Yves. He seems incredibly honest and obviously quite knowledgeable. Told me a few things to look for when I go view the car. Kinda chortled when I asked him what I was getting myself into - haha.
