Post Hibernation issues...SUs

Jeff, would you make that 2 (pdf) please?

Will do, Kim. I seem to be having some issues with my email right now, but as soon as that clears, I'll pass it along.
Jeff

Sure will, Barry. I downloaded it from a link I found here. There are a few great books on that site. I'll try to find it, but I'm pretty sure Jack knows where it is. I'll send you a copy of the file as soon as I can.
Jeff

Izzat the site with the SportSpeed Motorbooks "Tuning S.U. Carburetters" and Clive Trickey's stuff?

Having skimmed that SU booklet, my floats don't sit parallel with the lid of the chamber, they just flop over a few more degrees.
That could be a problem, or is it a side effect of grosse jets?

Barry, that illustration merely shows the reference points for setting the level. On page D4 of your Bentley book is a more accurate representation of how things really look.
Gross Jets. I hate them! (Spelling intentional!)
Jeff

You know I worked on a whole lots of minis when I was in England and I seem to remember some had just one of these carbs and some had a different type of carb, and the intakes were all kinds of crazy looking compared to a spridget but not once was there a carb problem. Maybe its just because the spridgets do more sitting around while those were newer and being used every day, or maybe its the duals that are more fidley. I know that most of the ones I fooled with were either 1275 or 1000 and the oldies with the 10 inch tires were really quick and with a motor swap to the 1275 they were really too peppy for driving around and God you never wanted to get on the motorway with the 10 inch tires, everything whined to high heavens and would drive one insane very quickly /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

Well there is easy then there is easy, just ask me sometime when you have a few hours.

Turns out, I'm pretty sure my floats are off, had a local guru look at them tonight and they're just flopping over because of the Grosse jets.
$350 for rebuilds.
Now I'm ready to buy a weber. Trade anyone?

I dunno Kim, They run, they're just too rich even with them shut off.
I know I've spent more time fiddling with them, buying books, reading, learning, understanding, and they're (for me) more drama than they're worth.
They're still not right, and I guess from the prognosis tonight, they'll never be right so to me, they're just another worn out part.
2 cables, 2 screws; Weber makes a little more sense.

"Told mah girl, I had to forget her; gotta buy me, a new carburetor"

Yeah, and forty eleven sets of main jets, air correction jets, and choke tubes and emulsion tubes, and................ /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif
That can get to be a pretty deep hole, Barry.
Unless your thinking of a DGV. It's a Pinto carburetor, for cryin' out loud!!
Why don't you give Hap a call?
Jeff

Well, I can tell you that I think weber makes a good carb, about the same carb as the Holley 5200 that was on all the pintos and things back in the day. I like them because of their simplicity. I gave a Subaru to my dad and used to be on a Subaru message board and lots of guys there had changed over to weber from their original hitachi and single port fuel injection because of the reliability and they claimed a significant icrease in power as well. I really don't know about the SUs or how they compare to the weber as far as power but they are reliable. I know the kits are high because you have to get a new intake with it and all. I would never be one to recommend changing from factory unless that is what you want.
