The obvious thing to check would be the wire connections at the key switch itself. Electrical problems can be tricky to track down sometimes, but givin your description, that's where I'd start looking.

Anytime I have a switch or electrical connection that is intermittent, I always try cleaning it before replacing. Most recently, the reverse switch on the Spitfire (sits on top of the tranny) quit working and so my backup lights would not come on. I simply prised apart the switch (carefully) and cleaned it up and it now works like new. Its a lot cheaper than buying new every time. Good luck!
