Possible new project for Basil??

I friend of mine wants me to go look at an old Jaguar for a young friend of his to see what it is and what it might be worth. The young man did some work for an older lady who lives out in the sticks and instead of paying him money, she gave him this "old car" that was her now deceased husband's. He said it was an older model and a convertible with a wood dash that is in need of some restoration. My guess is it could be either an XK120 or 140 Drop Head Coupe. If it is, I may offer to buy it for a fair market price (I'm not going to throw money at him, but I'm not going to try to gip him either. I had a 120 FHC once and it would be kinda cool to have another XK Jag. (If in fact that's what this is)

Nice project Basil.

The early XK's are amoung my favorite cars.

If you do proceed check out Ralph Broad's site, it can be found under

www.cape-international.co.uk

I've seen some of his "modification" bits that he produces or resells for XK's, such as five speed boxes and power steering systems. Very impressive.

Or you could just rebuild it stock.....

Cheers

Now you're getting 'theAutoist' mentality, Basil -"Just one more project. I know I can fit it in the garage - or enlarge the garage."

Basil,

Don't forget that Jaguar also sold a drophead coupe version of their Mark V saloon up until 1951, so it could be that model as well.

I'm also told that the cost of buying any parts for an old car like that is extraordinary. I was just talking to one guy who is restoring a Mark V drophead, and he said the cost of a replacement convertible top (something it needs) is $10,000 - ouch! So I don't know if parts for an XK120 are similarly priced.

Yeah, I thougt of that too. I might still be interested. As for cost of parts, its not as bad as all that if you shop around. I restored a 54 XK120 once and, yes it was a bit more than the average chevy, but not ompletely outrageous. It helps to be able to buy used and recondition the parts yourself where you can. For example, for the dash on my 120, instead of paying an arm and a leg for a new one, I took the dacsh pieces to a guy who is good with wood and had a duplicate made from solid walnut at about 1/4 the cost of a new dash. But you're right, parts are generally more $$. I image the Mark V would be more so than the XKs which are more "common".

You are only partially correct. The XK 120 and 140 Roadsters did not have a wood dash, but both the Fixed Head Coupe (which I had) and the Drop Head Coupe did, in deed, come with wood Dashes. The wood dash was gone completely with the XK 150.

Well, went out tonight to look at the car and was a bit disappointed. It turned out to be a very rusty 3.4S salon right hand drive. It would cost far more to restore than it would ever be worth, but we're going to see of we can help him sell it to someone who is capable and willing of such a project. One thing kind of cool is that the grill he had for the car was the wrong grill - it was a perfect condition XK120 grill. He ought to be able to get some decent $$ for that anyway.

Another project? You have to be kidding me! You can't even finish the 1st one! WTF?

What are you thinking Cy? Are you ready to throw all those wonderful years of marriage down the drain?

Don't you need to be saving $$$ for your 2006 Z06 Corvette? Someone told me you wanted a Vette with over 500HP! Is that true?

Another project? Now that's funny!!!!!

Hey Fido, long time no see! No, no Z06 in m y future, just a (hopefully) running XKE. By the way, my oldest son just bought a 2002 MY Zo6 from a guy in N. Carolina. Here's a picture:
