Positive to Negitave Ground

What is the proper procedure for converting the ground from positive to negative? Are there any problems associated with the change?

Thanks,

Ray

Ray,
As stated above there is not much to it. On the BJ7 all you need to do is change the battery connections, change the fuel pump (I went to a solid state type myself), and that is about it. There are a couple of changes at the voltage regulator and I can get some info on that for you once I can get to the garage through all the snow. Even though the new alternator has an internal voltage regulator you need to keep the existing one as it controls the no charge light on the tach. Be sure to read the wiring directions on the alternator as I neglected to do so and burnt out a new alternator by wiring it wrong.

Lastly you will need to fabricate a bracket for the alternator. I can send you pics of mine.

Steve

Ray,
The link to instructions Wayne sent are right on. There is no need to replace the fuel pump only follow the instructions. This is one of the easiest things you will do with your Healey. Are you doing this to install a modern radio/cd?

Well Chuck, in some of the Healey cars there is the matter of setting the Tachometer up to work correctly.---Keoke

Hi Ray it is really simple to change over. I also changed to an alternator at the same time. The brackets are simple to make as well. Skip

Chuck,

I plan to install a new audio system.

Another question: Any suggestions on type of atlernator to use? What about a good source for said device.

Ray

Ray, I'm actually still running with original equipment there. I haven't had any problems yet with power yet. Sounds like Skip would be a good source on that.

Hi Ray I am heading out to the shop right now to take some photos to send you. I will also send a photo of the pertronix in the car as well. Skip

Skip, how are you going to take a picture of the Pertronix it is suppose to be hidden---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Changing from positive to negative ground. To get the electronic tach to work correctly, I believe the loop (wire from the ignition switch to the coil) that goes through the pick up point at the back of the tach must reserve direction. I, however, have found that my tach acts a little peculiar with the pertronix ignition.

HI Shorn, Yes the pick up loop must be reversed and there are some minor wiring changes that are required inside the Tach.---FWIW---Keoke

cause I gots me a seeing eye camera, Ray you should have the photo`s by now if you have any questions let me know /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

Hi Skip,
Could you post the pictures. I would like to see them. Also post a picture of your seeing eye camera /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Thanks,
Chuck

The fuel pump can be converted by changing the diode under the contact cap, moss sells both diodes by themselves. same goes for the tac.
