Porsche question - 356 1600 super

Hey all, anybody know much about Porsche 356s? My aunt has one (pretty sure that's what it is), and my mom is thinking that since I resurrected a Midget after 18 years, then I should ask my aunt for this one so it doesn't rot away completely. All I know is it's an old Porsche hardtop coupe, and it used to have "1600 super" on the engine cover. Last I saw she had unburied it from her carport, but the "1600 super" logo had fallen off or got ripped off. It's been living in Arizona for the last 30 something years, and probably hasn't run in at least that long. About the only virtue I can see is that unlike my Midget, it has very little rust and probably has comparatively fewer cooling system problems being air-cooled. I think I need another project car like a hole in my head, but I wouldn't have the first clue about how hard it is to find parts for it, etc. Any idea how much something like that is worth? Should I just let my aunt find somebody else who may know more about Porsches take it off her hands?
 
Don't know much about that particular model, but in general 356 Porches are getting pretty expensive on the collector market (worth far more than our LBCs). If it's clean and mostly rust-free, then it's probably worth going after. Parts should be pretty available, I would think.

in this country, (US) I need an offside wing, and
door skin, I've been quoted US$1000 for both...

Dave, you've got a really good source of parts and info almost "next door" to you: Stoddard, in Cleve-land. Do a bit of "sniffing"! 30 years in arid clime? My "gut" reaction is: "GET THAT CAR!"... but I'm 'a nidiot,' so better/cooler heads should advise. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Sparky-- I had a 1963 356B Porsche and can agree that they get pretty pricy.. Many parts that you may need are available but some are pretty hard to find and/or are pretty pricy. I remember having to get on a list to wait for an order of brake drums to be made so I could spend $610 to get one of them. Wheel cylinders were about $100 (but you could get a kit to rebuild the existing ones) Very neat lines in that car so if you want and can afford it, go on -- be prepared that a bunch of us will jealous wnd we'll be guilty of coveting other people's property! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I wish I still had my '62 356 in the garage. I bought it for $600 in 1976. It's amazing how much the price has increased...
 
Going back about 10 years ago there was a little foreign car place on my way to work and the owner had a 356 coupe out front for sale. Man I really wanted that car, the 356 is such a cool little design. Even then it was way expensive, compared to what I spent a few years later on my TR6. I'd still love to have one though.
