TR2/3/3A Pops out of 2nd gear

I'm working through my list and am down to this problem:

My rebuilt (A type OD, full synchro) trans has always popped out of 2nd gear on deceleration. It doesn't matter if I'm backing off hard or easy, it will pop out. I just have to hold back on the shift lever with a few pounds of pressure to keep it in gear.

I'm hoping it is something in the top plate that I can fix without pulling the trans. The trans was rebuilt by a shop and I acquired it with the 8 boxes of parts when I bought the project.

I'm no expert, but sounds like maybe a bad 2nd gear top hat bushing or a bad detent (plunger and spring) in the shift linkage under the top cover.

The top unit will come right off. Check detents as Tush suggests. Check also for a worn fork. Tom
 
Had the same issue, I was convinced it was a broken 2nd gear bush. It wasn't. Readjusting the detent spring fixed it.

In my non-OD transmission that I rebuilt in my 73 TR6, it would do just as you describe with redline fluid. Switched back to non-detergent 30 oil, and the issue went away. What fluid are you using? Cheers, Mike
 
After much discussion with Ken Gillanders (who I believe is still one of the real authorities on these cars), I went with Valvoline 20-50 Racing oil. I had to be convinced but Ken saw much less brass wear after he experimented with several types of fluids.

It sounds like this problem (and the solution) still raises questions.
