Poor Dupli-Color engine enamel paint results

I've tried to paint a few small parts with the Dupli color gloss black ceramic engine enamel and can't seem to get good results. Many people have said that this is great paint but I just pulled my partial can back out of the garbage. I can't get it to lay flat, it always has a texture to it. The parts are cleaned to bare metal then cleaned with MEK or brake cleaner before painting. The last parts I tried was the water pump pulley assembly. The only thing I can think of is the fact that it does not get any cooler than 90 degrees at night. What I'm I doing wrong, never had this problem with other high temp paint?

Don't know if the brake cleaner is leaving a residue. I use metal prep which etches the surface allowing the paint to "grab" the metal. Just my best guess.

I think that you need to use a "body wash" to get the parts clean then let them sit is the hot sun for a while to draw out any residue, as Elliot said above. My entire engine is done with the Dupli Color Ceramic paint and I think that it's great, but I gave it time to cure and gave the surface time to dry out before painting.

The parts need to be neutralized, use dish soap or something like that.

The brake cleaner is you problem. I don't know what's in it that attacks paint but it is there. My guess is it leaves some residue. You should wipe the parts down with lacquer thinner or "Total Prep" if you can find it. Of course, I'd also lay down a coat of primer first, especially over bare metal.(you didn't mention priming) If you have a part you plan to paint and it's really gunked up, use oven cleaner on it. Works great. The only thing the temp will affect in your case is how fast the paint drys when you apply it. I've painted at least a dozen motors with this stuff and it works great. Doesn't that Ceramic paint need fairly high temperature to cure and "melt" the ceramic ingredient ?

Mallard, you are trying to paint when your part is 90 plus degrees and your paint will not lay down. I painted a TR-3 gas tank Saturday morning and it was 85 degrees, It would not gloss up and had orange peel. Cool your parts down and keep your paint inside in the A/C until right brfore you use it. Right now its 7:30 P.M. and 108 outside. Good luck, Bill C, Mesa, AZ.

If you have ever used DOT 5 brake fluid or any paint care products containing silicone (like Armor-All), you can wind up with silicone left that most solvents (sanding, etc.) will not remove. A special-purpose solvent like Acryli-Clean is the only way I've found to remove it.

Not Dupli-color ... thats part of why we all like it so much.

are you priming the parts first?? some paints you can put the color coat on with out primer and some you must use primer coat first

My 2 pennies worth from a Rookie.

I've used a lot of Dupli-color on small parts
I did not powder coat or parts too big to powder coat..

I've had no problems. I take the part to bare metal,
(do not touch it with bare fingers), I clean the part
with Acetone and then apply a primer coat. Allow 24 hrs
to cure. Than I lay down the first coat of Dupli-color
and let it cure 2 days or so. Then a second coat of
Dupli-color and let it cure for a week or so.

It is always over 85* where I live.

Just a TR rookie's opinion. Take it with a grain of salt.

Thanks for all the good advice. I've tried over time almost all of the above mentioned. Never had a problem like this, yes I've had problems mostly my fault in the prep.The finish looks good on a rough surface but not smooth. Maybe I got a bad can, it does happen. Should have the head and block back next week and will try again with a new can. Thanks

I think I did paint the Block with Dupli-color, but painted the air cleaner box with VHT Engine Enamel, which was a dollar or two more, but laid down and covered better than the Dupli-color for me, but I was not dissatisfied with the motor.
