POLISHING HEATER BLOWER HOUSING

Does anyone know how (or if) the heater blower housing can be polished, back to the original shine? I think it is Bakelite and their is some question if it can be polished? Any suggestions will help.

I would think a light rubbing compound would work. I use a Maguires product on my boat called color restorer (in a blue plastic bottle)this is not a highly abrasive product. It should do a nice job then put on a light coat of wax to give it some luster.

Whatever you use, try the back side first in case it doesn't work out. My experience with bakelite has not been good and I've burned some with too agressive buffing.

Clean real real well then use black shoe polish.
 
I hit mine with a new coat of semi-gloss black paint after a good cleaning.. looks good to me, we'll see how long it lasts though.
 
Jack is right on with the shoe polish. The gloss resin finish layer on Bakelite is quite thin, you can buff right through it in a jiffy. then you are left with the exposed filler particle resin layer. Clean it CLEAN, Make a number of shoe polish applications rubbing them in well, polish to a shine, then use auto wax and polish it again. One of my good friends restored old telephones for a living.
