Polarizing a Generator

Recently fitted a new generator and regulator on to my GT6.

Generator is a Lucas C40L.

Reading to polarize the generator, but getting conflicting reports from various sources about which terminal I should be polarizing on - Armature or Field.

Car is wired for negative earth.

Question is do I polarize between the Battery and the Armature or Battery and the Field?

One source said it depends on whether the generator is internally or externally grounded. I believe it is internally grounded, but not 100 % sure.

This has been a 2 month headache with the generator and trying to get it right.

Thanks

It is internally grounded; and the field is what needs to be polarized.

Thank you.

That is what I thought, but wanted to double check.
