T-Series Points Triggering Electronic Ignition

Does anyone remember an electronic ignition system sold by auto suppliers back in the day that are triggered by the points? The points never burn and last forever with very low voltage going to them. The cam fiber is the only thing that wears out, especially if not lubed regularly. PJ

Yes I do. I had one on my car when I was in college in the 70’s.

Was that the CDI (capacitive discharge ignition)? Radio Shack sold a kit for that; I assembled one and installed it on our '73 Celica.

When CD systems were introduced, my first thought was: "Why over-complicate something that is so easily serviced?"

Same with the opto and mag proximity schemes. Sensors, triggers, control boxes, more wiring... all susceptible to more complex problems to sort than a simple set of points and a condenser. Not to mention the expense.
