I suppose it's human nature to want to "do the right thing," if it "seems" like a good cause, but jeez, don't people engage in critical thinking any more?

That's been around on the web for a year or so.

Here's the article I have my kids read....

Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide!
The Invisible Killer
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Dihydrogen monoxide:
is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
may cause severe burns.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
Contamination Is Reaching Epidemic Proportions!

Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

as an industrial solvent and coolant.
in nuclear power plants.
in the production of styrofoam.
as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.
Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The Horror Must Be Stopped!
The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

Yeah, I know, I think it was even posted here a while back. But I saw it pop up on the "Now Being Viewed" YouTube thing and thought I'd re-post.

I've used it for several years now as an introduction to chemistry....8th graders are so cute when the lights come on and they realize di = 2 Hydrogen and mono = 1 Oxygen....We get to have a great dissection of the article to determine if there is anything "untrue" about what is being said. WHich of course leads to a whole nother lesson in reporting bias and how facts and figures don't necessarily make something "true"
Basically I'm trying to do a small part in creating adults who don't believe everything they read or see!

"Waiter, I'd like two glasses of H and one glass of O, please......"

I do that in restaurants every so often......

Yep, that's the one! Actually with school getting ready to start up, I'm always looking for these types of sites on the web. Anything you guys see that is reported as "actual" in a news type format. I really like ones that have "data" to support their claims because then my kids get to interpret the data and see if they draw the same conclusions. It all goes to my preaching on how Science is supposed to be non-dogmatic...but often it isn't.

That's an unfortunate fact! And while your teaching those young skulls-full-of-mush about science, be sure to teach them to always question and challenge the conventional wisdom because history has proven time and again that conventional wisdom is not always correct.

Penn & Teller's Bu**s**t is one of those oases in a TV land of the same-old-same-old!!! Without the questioning of the status quo, there wouldn't be any advances made, not in Science, Religeon or Politics or anything else for that matter! Skeptics of the world...UNITE!

(or "UNTIE" as Basil so nicle twists...)

Encourage skeptiscicm - even when, and I find this difficult - it is my belief / opinion / idea that is being analyzed!!
