Playing around with "new" Martin

I'm trying clawhammer but having lots of trouble. Why is it so difficult? I have a friend in Florida who plays banjo and we get together once in a while and play some folk songs, western stuff, bluegrass, whatever. He's not bad but is really a guitar player. He was part of a folk song group back in the '60s. I'm really just a strummer - not good at finger-picking. What the **** - I do what I can and have fun.
 
Clawhammer style (or frailing) is different for sure. And since you're a strummer, I think if you stick with it it will come to you. I recommend highly Patrick Costello and his teaching. He's on YouTube and has several books out. Here's an early YouTube post - plenty more to check out:
