I am about to order some Plastigauge from Summit, and I am wondering which flavor to get. One offers a range of .001 to .003 and the other offers .001 to .006 (I think). The first is a lot cheaper.

BTW, this is for a 1500 engine, in case that makes a difference.
 
what are you platigauging and what is the acceptable clearance?
 
Uhhhhhh. I dunno...

I am checking main and rod bearings. I will have to look up the acceptable clearances when I get home. I don't have that info available.
 
I would go with the .001 to .003 for assembly after a rebuild and the .001 to .006 to check clearance to see if it needed a rebuild.
 
Why order it from Summit? Any decent parts house should have it in stock. I think I paid about 2 bucks a package, the last time I bought any. I rarely use it anymore.

I wasn't sure why you were ordering it either but figured you had your reasons. Wonder what the shelf life is on that stuff. I've got a lot of it but I've had it for several years. Guess for a couple of bucks I should toss what I have and just get new when I yank my 1500 in a couple of weeks.

It DOES have a self life. Gets kinda brittle and dried out. Best not to trust it (the old stuff) for as little as it costs. I'm sure the "crush" properties are affected, thus giving bogus results. NAPA carries it too.
