Plans for the Midget

First let me say thank you in advance for any and all advice I get from the knowledgable enthusiasts I find myself amongst.
Right now I have just bought a MkIII, in excellent condition, 90% original with the exception of a paint job and lamp covers etc.
Short term plans I have is to replace the dizzy with a pointless one, Weber conversion and eventually a 5sp box. The heater is already on its way out.
Any advice or comments on a brand of dizzy, where best to purchase, and best fits for a 5 speed will be appreciated, also any anticipated problems I might encounter that the Haynes manual carefully neglets to mention.
Cheers.

I swear by the Mallory Distributors myself. Very reliable and easy to find. For a lot of performance parts, try Frontline Spridget: https://www.mgcars.org/frontline/index.htm. They also have the 5-speed conversion. If you're going with a Weber, ditch the manifold and go with a PaceSetter header unless you have emission testing where you live. I find a lot of parts off Ebay but make sure they have high positive feedback. My 2cents worth.

Wait, we have a case of apples and oranges.
Baz's car is a 1275, and Brian's is a 1500.

I'd stay with the stock distributor, unless it is totally shot. Even then you can rebush it and do just fine. I'd stay away from a weber down draft for a 1275. You may want to look into a single HIF44 SU. Oh, and a pertronix ignition kit eliminates the hassle of points, but does nothing to increase performance. For a 5-speed there are two kits to consider: rivergate and morriservice. Before spending money on expensive carbs and distributors and headers I'd pull the engine and overbore it slightly to tighten things up and replace the bearings. Bolt on performance parts will make little difference on tired engines. ...my 2 cents.

Hello and welcome,

I had a Mallory, I'm back to the orginal Lucas now which works just fine when everything is up to snuff.

I've had the Weber DGV and dual SUs and I think the SUs out perform the Weber WHEN PROPERLY REBUILT AND TUNED!!! (i can't stress that enough, you can't just stick a pair on and expect to go.)

I have a Datsun 5-speed that I installed with the Morriservice kit which I got from the Morriservice guy who lives just a few miles away from me. He's a great guy, really helpful and his kit was quality and super easy to install. I love the 5-speed. By far I think the best upgrade you can make to these cars.

From browsing through the other forums I get the impression that the SU's are just fine and I'm just dreaming.
I'm sold on the 5sp, currently my 1st is a bit grainy and rough and it slips out of third occasionally so a new box was inevitable.
The dizzy is really OK, now that I've removed the trunking from the heater, I can get to it a bit better.
My ambition for greater reliablity through new(er) components exceeds my motivation to slow down, clean things up and get the OE working properly.
Again, thank you all, you've just probably saved me $1k and many nights in the garage swearing.
5 speed is a go, I'll wait on the carbs and dizzy until something goes awry.
Now I just have to figure what's up with the brake lights and I'm off to the lakes.
Thank you all again, for your time reponding.

I second the 5 sp upgrade, Alittle on the expensive side, but the best addition I have put on my car. I also used Morrisservice. Very helpfull and very nice to deal with. He uses all stock Datsun parts, can get them at any auto parts store.
