MGB Places to Take Your Dead MGB's in Denver

Hey all,

As you know I recently purchased 2 MGB's a 63 and a 66. Both cars need full restorations. I live just South of Denver I am looking for shops to perform various tasks such as body work, painting and engine rebuilding. Does anyone have suggestions of good shops in the Denver area? I would also be willing to ship the engines and transmissions to someone for rebuilding if that is a better option. I only want to farm out a portion of the body work so I need a shop who will work with me.

I also live in Denver (Lakewood) and have an MGA--not a B--but do my own work on it. The best source by far for where to go (and where not to go) in this area is the local MG Car Club. Their meetings are the second Wednesday night of each month at "On The Border" across from Colorado Mills Mall on West Colfax. In fact, I just got home from the September MGCC meeting before I got on the computer and found your message.

There are many more B owners than A owners in the club and several of them take their cars to local shops for repairs, including engine rebuilding for some of the vintage racers. If you don't want to wait for the October meeting, call the club number at 303-779-8739 or look on the web for "MGCC Rocky Mountain Centre."

By the way, this would be a great weekend to visit with other B owners at the English Motoring Conclave at Arvada Memorial Park at Ralston Road (58th) and Ammons on Sunday, Sept. 14. They already have 350 cars signed up (as of tonight) and expect another 250 to register during the 8:00 Sunday morning registration (some of us drive fair-weather-only cars, so wait to the last minute to register). There are usually more MGBs and Midgets there than any other marque/model. $20 to enter a car, free if you don't. If you need more info on the Conclave, call Scott Story at 303-755-1426--he is in the MGCC too.

Scott,

At the Conclave yesterday, I asked several members of the MG club where they take their cars and the answer was Sports Car Craftsmen in Wheatridge. They do both engine work and paint/body work, are a Moss parts distributor, and carry used parts, so they provide "one-stop shopping." Apparently they specialize in MGs, Triumphs, and Healeys. Their phone number is 303-422-9272.

Scott,

Did you get to the Conclave? They had about 580 registered entries on Sunday--biggest event ever in Colorado. There were 12 MGAs, at least 60 MGBs, and 11 Sunbeam Tigers (my new dream car). They even had a dozen or so new BMW Minis, but they kept them separated from the "real" Minis.

Steve,

Unfortunately I couldnt make it I tried to clear my schedule but it just wasnt possible I had several things on my honney do list which needed my immediate attention. I plan to contact Car Craftmen today to get a quote for rebuilding the engine on the first car. I plan to begin dismantleing it this weekend.

Steve,

I went down to that shop Sports Car Craftsmen and spoke to them about my cars. I will be useing thier services for some of the work. They had about 20 MGBs in various stages of restoration. I wish I could afford to have them do more work but I need to keep my belt tight and not get lazy. Thanks for the tip this will definately help.

Scott

Scott,

Glad to help out. Let me know what you think of their work. I'll try to post some photos of the MGBs at the Conclave so you can see where you'll be in a year or two!

Well I have the first car in the garage and I have started stripping it down. I am taking lots of pictures and marking everything for later restoration and reassembly. Have a look and you will see what I am up against. From where I sit now the outer rocker panels, inner panels, floor panels and lower rear half section on both sides will need replacement. One of my front wings will also need a lower section. My plan is to replace these bits then to have the entire shell bead blasted. After that I will look for additional rust for repair and treat the body for protection against future rust. Any tips or ideas on the best rust prevention products? I am thinking of useing POR 15 at this point.
