I have heard that it is best to replace them anyway, due to some of the studs coming in contact with the water jacket and becoming corroded. check this:

the new ones come in sets and you can request instructions from the seller. Better yet, get a Service manual as well.

It'd be good insurance to replace the studs unless they're in REALLY good shape (NO pitting or corrosion at the bottoms). One stress riser on one stud and you'll be doing the whole job over again... with some added grief in-between. If one breaks down in the block there's no easy way to get the "stump" out. BTDT.

I have the head off of one of my 4.2s and could take some pictures if you think that it would help you. I will also replace the studs during the rebuild. I also have an extra 4.2 that is complete 2 carbs, starter, alternator etc. If you know anyone that needs one beachbumbarry@msn.com
