Piston... MIA

Re: Piston... MIA

We had that one cylinder rebored and an oversized piston put in. It didn't even last another 100 miles before it went belly up again. Since you have another block, I would use it and check any parts that you use from the old one really closely.

I agree!

I've tried to salvage damage like yours before, but it always ended badly. Even the valve gear can be affected by something that catastrophic.

Re: Piston... MIA

OK, my opinion.

Yes, everything can be affected by that damage. Not the least the oil pump and bearings. The engine has to be torn down, but that is expected anyway since the bore is scratched. It's still usable, that is after complete cleaning and new bore, piston, rings, bearings, gaskets. This includes cleaning the head.

Small aluminum fragments, though relatively soft, have gone everywhere inside the engine. Actually they're not that soft when the surface of all aluminum fragments is coated with oxide. And they can really destroy bearings.

Personally I don't think it was hydraulic lock. Because: The rod is completely straight - sort of. Maybe it isn't but it looks like it's not bent.

Re: Piston... MIA

Yeah, I'm not planning on using that block anymore I've got a fresh one in the shed.
Here's the rod from another angle

And the remaining 5 AE pistons which won't be used again either.

Hmmmm, five used TR6 pistons that could be made into "the killer 1500" build.

Are they flat tops?

Somebody talk me outta this quick.

Re: Piston... MIA

Sure looks tweaked to me. The casting line isn't straight.

Re: Piston... MIA

I'd wouldn't be surprised,
Just think of the force it took to pulverize that piston. And you know it must have gotten lopsided when a piece of the piston got jammed and against the wall. Made a heck of a rattling racket,I tell you that..

Re: Piston... MIA

Connecting rod for missing piston on the right. A low mileage unmolested rod on the left.
