Piper Cams: anyone running one?

I have a Piper 245 cam for my B, i wanted to know if anyone else is running one?...(any Piper cam for the matter)

thanks

Crane here.

I was running a Piper 270BP. Previous owner but it in. It's a regrind I suppose, but I'm rebuilding the engine now, and it doesn't look like it has much wear. Don't know how many miles are on it, but enough that the bearings were down to brass. I was going to replace with Piper, but couldn't find a US supplier. Piper will ship direct, but it was price prohibitive with the transcontinental shipping.

Piper was not to responsive to me. I am in need of a cam card so i can try and set it up properly but so far that has been a futile search.

Do you have a Brit-tek catalog? Call Bob and he can help you set it up. He used to sell Piper cams, and was able to identify the cam in mine when I called him. He no longer carries them because he says they are to hard to get in the states. Another good source is <https://www.octarine-services.co.uk/> The owner, Chris Betson is a great guy and regular on the UK BBS. He will answer questions, and is well versed in Piper.

I just got a response from Piper, it is not my cam, but it gives me a great idea.

I guess I need to be a little more patient...

I would agree. Anything else would require offset keys, degree wheel, feeler gauges... and even with an old chain I should think the MOST it could be off would be less than 4° either way.

Doc

correct me if I am wrong, but
4° either way seems significant to me

or once again am I just that anal.

Significant, yes, if you're heading for a checker'd flag. Actually it'd be morelike 2° at the crank, methinks... anyhow: there isn't much to be done about it without going to offset keys or a fully adjustable cog. Tons o' bucks for a small deviation. Frankly, fitting new cogs, tensioner and chain should have it well within factory tol's. Offset keys if ya just GOTTA get closer. If you're really anal, get out th' ol' wally and get the vernier cog. They ARE really sexy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif

I've always pulled out the dial indicator, degree wheel and offset keys.

*sigh*

You're all ate up wif it... Dial it in then. It's good therapy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

No offense intended here, I'm NOT trying to push any 'hot buttons'!

I do it on all Alfas (vernier cams from factory), all Lotus (a grand collection of offset dowels), and with this B of SWMBO's with the Crane bumpstick. If it's a "rock-stock" LBC engine it gets new timing gear (chain, tensioner and cogs) and the "ruler" alignment. Never had a problem with the ruler method, BTW.

Thanks,

Lord knows I need more therapy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My psychiatrist quit yesterday, so my therapist will be doing extra time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Mine quit takin' my calls. Yesterday.

Then there's this:

I bet that would fit nicely in my alfa... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

With the T-C heads, Webers and the pan in place, sadly it won't. ~I measured~ it to see /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
