pinging / pre ignition

I've got 1275, scatter cam 60" oversize engine running a weber dcoe , lcb, all balanced. I'm using a Nissan distributer and have set the timing to 11btdc. maximum top out at around 33 @3500

This setting works well where I stay , i.e. 1400m above sea level, using 93 octane fuel. However on a recent regularity rally which ran across mountains to sea level I suffered from pinging at high and low altitude, low altitude was easily managed but mountain passes was a bit of a challenge.

Any suggestion on how to fix it, short of changing timing settings while driving?

Try a lower spark plug temperature. That fixed my pinging issues.
