Yep, it's that time again! I'm busy helping the boys make cars for the big race this Friday. My older son wanted a penguin and my little guy a NASCAR Featherlite. Well both of those cars are still in the works and should be finished in the next day or so. Well, not to be left out, I decided to make a car too! A few years ago, I made an MGB, so this year.... yeah.. A BUGEYE with White Walls! lolol! During the race, we do three cars at a time. Often it will work out, there is a empty lane, depending on the number of boys, so we'll use a "Dummy Car". This year, I hope they let me use my bugeye. That being the case, I chose Polly Pocket to be the driver! lol! I'm sure any of the boys would be mortified to be beaten by Polly! But of course, I wouldn't let that happen, my car will be slow... kinda like the original!

I'll post some photos of the boys cars when they get finished.

I loved the Pinewood derby!

Outstanding, good stuff.

iris blue? or did you go with a non traditional colour?

nice resto - must have been some work fabricating a new hood /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

That is awesome!

In my day, the Dads were not allowed to race with the boys. But the Dad competition was where all the action was. One year, I started a chop top sedan design, but quit Cubscouts before the race (my little brother was still in, though). My dad finished the car and completely dominated the competition. That car won every race by FEET.

My dad built pine wood cars like he did show cars. All of our pine wood cars had pin striped paint jobs that you could fix your hair in. Pine wood derby was the best!

Love it John!! That came out great!! Seems like we have uncovered another common thread among us!! I too competed successfully in the "Dads" class while encouraging my boys. I have a nice little trophy from 1990 engraved with "The Grand Prix Award", and the mayors name, which just happened to be "Samuel Ferrieri". Never fails to impress!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Back in the early 60's my dad "helped" me build one, which dominated the competition, except for another engineer dad in the neighborhood, who actually got within a foot of "mine". I was too young at the time to realize that the competition wasn't really between the kids, but between the engineer dads. I have since helped other kids with their projects winning them some 1st place trophies.

Yeah, in the years before I did the chop top sedan, my contribution to the project was sanding.

I believe that to be a major contributing factor to my current hatred of sanding and painting.

Oh my Drew, I just made a print of that. Going to be a few hours of fun.

Thanks guys! The big race is Friday night. When I get a chance I'll post some photos of my boys cars. It's definitely one of the highlights of the year.

John, I showed the picture to my wife. She wanted to know if you had a daughter... or why you had a Polly Pocket Doll?

There is NOTHING wrong with a grown man enjoying Polly Pocket dolls!
