Pin Striping?

After waking up the Spider from it's winter's nap, it's time to start thinking about this year's projects. One thing I want to do is to put the decals and pinstriping right. However, not being an artist, and no being able to draw a straight line without a ruler, I'm wondering how I can get the pin striping on straight. The current striping is there (although badly faded). Any ideas? I don't want to expend lots of energy only to make the car look worse than it is now. Thanks!

Rich:

I can't offer any advise myself, but I recall seeing a guy doing some freehand pinstriping once, and I asked him what the "secret" was....he told me:
"It's all in how you hold your tongue!"
That sounds funny, but if you've ever seen anyone do this, it almost seems true.
Anyway, I've heard that freehand is best, but the "wheel-tool" stripers are OK. Here's some:

Actually the idea of a ruler isn't so bad.

Stretch a string where you want the stripe to go. Tape down one end of the string stretch it & tape down the other end. Lay masking tape along the string & remove string. Follow the masking tape with the stripe. Or did I miss something?

Excuse me for being stupid but I thought that was 3M red refelctive striping tape on the Spider. I saw someone had a Spider striping kit on Ebay last month that was reflective 3M red material.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I should have been more specific in that I've got a roll of the pinstriping tape, and am just concerned about getting it straight down the length of the car. Also, it's a "dual stripe" tape (two stripes on the one tape, and I need to figure out how to make the "point" at the front of the car.

Rich,

Installing pin striping decals isnt really all that difficult. Press dow the end of the striping (lightly) where you want to begin, and hold your hand (thats holding the striping about 2' from that point and slowly and patiently lay the striping down the reason you only apply light pressure is so you can pull it back up if it isnt winding up where you want it. After you get it all where you want it, rub your fingers over it and it will adhear to your paint. Also make sure your surfaces are as clean and free of wax/polish as you can get them.
