That's incredible!
When we were in Colorado Springs,I asked
one of the locals about driving up there.
I was told that it was about $30+ dollars,
& that if you had an automatic trans,it could
do some damage (rental car?).
I don't think they let you drive fast up the hill.
Shawn,you know anything about that?

I don't remember them charging us to drive up & the rental company knew where we'd been when we turned the car in - they said lots of people do it...I do know my body didn't like the air up on top!

Driving up there at a reasonable speed was good enough for me! There are sveral drop offs that are several hundred feet straight down!

I'm not sure what the current toll is to climb Zebulons Mountain. Not sure what the automatic transmission comment is about either. Unless they speak from personal experience or urban myth.(?) The road does have speed limits just like any other. The Hill Climb is during the fourth of July. If you don't feel like driving, there is also a Tram that allows some incredible scenery.

Another mountain drive that is fun, just off I-70 and paved is Mt. Evans. The summit parking lot is over 14K feet. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Highest paved road in the world they say. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif Just have to be careful up there. Not only is the air thin (especially for you lowland types) but the weather can change wicked quick up there.

Been to the PP hill climb a few times for work.

Here is some pics

Hill Climb has not been on the 4th of July for years. This year it is on July 27th. Here is the website https://www.ppihc.com

Pikes Peak summit parking lot is also over 14k feet but it is not paved, yet (they're working on it)
Been up there in the middle of the race when the weather changed for the suck really quickly, got stuck up there for hours, not fun

That is nonsense about the AT, I have beaten on a rental car a few times on the mountain without any problems. It is not really that steep. They do check the temp of your brakes halfway down, to make sure you are not using them too much

Rates are $10 per adult, $5 per child or $35 per car max. Not sure what the race day rates are, I had credentials
edit: just looked at the website, tickets are $40

Well, its been years since I've been to it. At least its still in July. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

There is still lots of arguing going on about whether or not to pave whats left. Racing body, environmentalists, parks departments etc... Don't count it as paved, or going to be paved until the last piece of paving equipment leaves the jobsite.

The paved part was the emphasis regarding my reference to Mt. Evans. Plus Mt. Evans is higher by 154 feet. Mt. Evans is 14,264 feet, Pikes Peak is 14,110 feet. There are 53 ranked peaks (plus five unranked, but named and mapped peaks)in Colorado over 14,000 feet. We call them 'fourteeners'. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Mount Evans is the highest paved road in North America. I believe the highest paved road in the world is Ticlio Pass (Peru) at nearly 16,000 feet.

If they pave Pike's Peak, it will be just one more reason I wish I was born 30 years earlier. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

You mean North America isn't the world? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Looks like Tilico pass is popular with bicyclists. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

The Karakoram Highway is supposed to be paved now too, which would drop Mt. Evans to third place world wide I guess. The last I saw of it I thought it was still dirt. Must be all the debris from rockslides. The Karakoram Highway also claims the highest international road honors and highest international border crossing at 15,397 feet connecting China and Pakistan. They also claim to be expanding it to triple its traffic!

There is no arguing anymore, it is confirmed that they are paving it. Every year they have added more.

The paving is not voluntary though and is the result of a lawsuit from the Sierra Club vs. the City of Colorado Springs. As they continue to pave it, they are being faced with new challenges that could stop the paving and find the whole thing back in court to stop further paving. It is projected to cost 20 million and isn't scheduled to be completed until 2012. (Which of course when the Mayan Calendar claims the world will see a new beginning.) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

In 2002 several of us who were driving our Healeys across Route 50 from Ocean City to Lake Tahoe (for the 50th Anniversary of the Healey 100)diverted north to climb Pike's Peak. We got to the entrance gate when it opened in the morning so that we could count on their being no oncoming traffic and drove our Healeys up the Pike's Peak Road in a "spirited manner". Driving the unpaved section was thrilling to say the least and by the time we got to the summit I was chugging up steadily in first gear to keep the power up.

It was a wonderful experience.

I don't think I would want to ride Ticlio Pass on a bicycle! I suppose there are lunatics out there that would do it though.

When we got to the top of Pike's Peak, there was a guy who had climbed it - on foot! He was walking around to everyone in the building there where I was eating a hot dog trying to 'mooch' a ride down.

Was he looking a little "peaked"! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif (sorry, I couldn't resist!!)

Should have told him that the hard part (hiking up) was done. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

All down hill (literally) from there! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Or at least by walking down he would finish with a balanced leg work out. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

We've been up there three times. Once in my Bronco and twice in my CJ7. It's something everyone should do at least once in their lifetime. 2nd time up, we got caught in a small, (thank goodness), snow shower. Mt Washington in NH is a great ride also. The road is narrower than Pikes Peak in some places. If you tell the guys there that you've been up Pikes Peak, they'll tell you, the road up Pikes Peak is a super highway. Not quite, but driving up Mt. Washington will keep you on your toes. PJ

I've worked the Mt Washington Hillclimb as well, it is a much scarier and tougher event than Pikes Peak IMO, the road is really narrow (PP is a superhighway in comparison) and the drops off the side are much more dangerous than PP.
Pikes Peak just became more famous of the two events because the road is longer and the altitude is much higher

We've been up there three times. Once with my Bronco and twice with my Jeep. All with automatic transmissions. I haven't a clue where that info came from that it will harm an automatic transmission. The road is smooth and plenty wide enough for two cars to pass without any problem. The view is fantastic. We were up there once and it snowed the day before. Actually, Mount Washington in Hew Hampshire has a little more challenging road than Pikes peak. And the guys there will tell you so! Been up there twice. Just make sure you have good brakes!
