Photobucket Disables Third Party Hosting

Is it relatively simple to find the url of a photo so it can be shared on a web page? I opened one of your photos, copied the url, but it was a very long string of numbers and letters which didn't end in jpg, png, etc.

For example, I tried adding your photo of Ford carb floats, but the BCF image box said "invalid file type".

Thanks.
Tom M.

They (Google) don't make it easy to post direct links but I found the workaround. In the case of the Ford carb (actually fuel sending unit) float, there are two strings you need to paste together to form a valid direct URL link. I found the following method works.

First you need the path to the page where the file is stored. In this case: "https://www.sites.google.com/site/purlawson/home/pictures"
(copied from the browser address bar).
The second/last part of the URL is the name of the photo itself. In this case: Floats-Smiths-n-Ford.jpg
This is copied from the Google site list of files on the page mentioned above.
The two strings are pasted together to form the complete string...

That string is then pasted in the URL tab of the the image link shown on this (or other) website's editor. I have never been able to open a document from the Google site, copy its address, and paste a functioning link. As you said... the link is long and unreadable. The workaround I found is cumbersome at times but once I figured out the trick it works well enough.

Thanks for posting that. I'm also impressed by the "live action" background with the trees waving in the wind. Nice!

Question: is there a way to post a photo on BCF, so it can be hotlinked to another site or embedded in an email?

Whenever I try the "copy image address" from a BCF image, the address ends in lots of numbers - not jpg, png, etc.

Thanks.

No, unfortunately BCF is not an image hosting platform that you can hot link to (I could not afford the bandwidth)

OK, thanks. No problem. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something.

Unfortunately it seems more and more photo hosting sites dont' let you get the actual image url (ending in jpg, etc.). So far, Flickr still works.

So far, but no guarantee that will last for ever.

Not to hijack this thread; using BCF to host my photos suits me just fine.

However, I must say I am enjoying the photos in this thread!! From gun-totin' groundhogs, a beautiful MG, a few chipmunks to an awesome train set (can we see more?). Basil's bird photo takes the cake.

Thanks! Back to the regular discussion...

That is really cumbersome. I went to your site from the first link, right clicked on "view" of the first file and choose "copy link address". That gives you a linkable URL. If you want to see the photo first before linking, left click "view" to open the image, then right click on the image and choose "copy image address". For the one-button Mac users, there is some key your supposed to hold down while pressing the mouse button to get the option menu to come up.

Greg - what's the url you got from that first image on Dave's google site?

The first one "Converted Speedo Drag Specialties Front" gave me this:

https://home.mindspring.com/~lawins01/Mini-Files/Gauges/DragSpecialtiesFront01.jpg

But that's just a link from Mindspring.

Were you able to get a true image link (ending with jpg or png etc.) from any of Dave's Google hosted images? Like the third one down, Floats Smiths n Ford - gives me this link:

https://4b2db4dc-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites...V8dklsZi9gf3rcFK31edEV3e07DbEO&attredirects=0

That's not a true "image" link. Even if I remove all the stuff after the "jpg", it doesn't work (Google gives a 404 error).

Thanks.

EDIT:
Greg, Thanks for trying. However, if you tried the first picture on the page (the one Tom mentioned above) that picture and the one below it are not on the Google site, they are on one of my old Mindspring webpages. All the Google site has is a link to those remote images.

Try your technique on any of the files that have both "View" and "Download" options available. Those are the images stored on Google. When you try and get a direct link to those, you end up with the massive long address string that does not end with any of the recognized file formats (no JPG, GIF, PNG, etc). Those require the cumbersome method.

Picture #4 down from the top "https://www.sites.google.com/site/purlawson/home/pictures" + "Mini-Dashboard-Mine.jpg" =

Well this sucks. This was a really cool thread with lots of cool pictures. Unfortunately, most (all?) the pictures were hot linked from Photo bucket.

I'll say it again - if you want to ensure the image you post remains in your post the best way is to upload it directly. Yes it takes a little more effort, but otherwise you risk the image going away. If you do link with a URL at least check the box to "retrieve picture and reference locally".

OK, I see the mindspring thing now. I was able to get the third photo to link in my previous post and see it in my reply, but when I posted the reply, it only showed a broken link icon.
