Peter Egan-retiring from R&T

It seems unreal to me that I've been reading his stuff for 30 years now. Wonderful writer and has a real grasp of British car ownership. He's not leaving the magazine fully but he will no longer be writing his monthly column. I as lucky enough to meet Peter and Barb at Watkins Glen a few years ago and even have dinner with them. I hate to say it, but he's the only reason I read R&T. ~Peter Egan Retirement Column~

X2.
I just renewed my subscription too. I want my $4 back! :jester:

I've read just about everything he's written (car related) over the last 2 years. "On the Road" is my favorite compilation, by far.
I picked up his Cycle World writings to help get through the winter.

What surprises me is how quietly he just sort of slipped out the door. I wish they would have done a retrospective/interview of some kind.

Truly the end of an era. Peter was the only reason I read R&T (and Cycle World) as well, let the subscriptions lapse last year as that wasn't enough reason to keep the mag coming. Hope he can enjoy his retirement, he sure had a great run as a writer.

When I was first saving money for a fun old car a few years ago, I got the collected Side Glances books to tide me over. Great stuff, it's really where I discovered Bugeyes.

Yeah, it does seem quick. But in the column, he says he has some "moderately serious health problems", so that may be a clue. He and Barb are in their sixties with no kids so maybe it just seems like a good time. She is close to retirement from the school she works at (I think speech therapy or something like that), so maybe this is because she's retiring. My wife retired recently and it's all I think about now. :friendly_wink: Here's me and Peter at Watkins Glen. The guy on our right is Bob Girvin, who was probably the late Al Moss's best friend.

Great photo, Nial.

Not sure which of the two I enjoyed reading more, Egan or Carlson. Certainly Mr. Egan has been more widely read, and his "panty hose" reference to getting into a Lotus is classic. Sad to learn he's slowing down.

Always enjoyed reading Rob Walker's account of F 1 and Peter Egan. I've missed Rob for some time and really hate to see that Peter is slowing down....and I hope that's all it is.

He sure had a way with words... I remember reading about preparing a trailer for an adventure. He cut his hand on some sharp metal and had to, "Hop on one foot to facilitate swearing." He's also the guy that said, regarding British sports car suspension, "any suspension system will work if you don't let it."

T.T.
