Peter Egan - In the Shadow of the Red Car

I did catch that... a nice write up of a great book.

One more reminder of how much I'd like a TC some day...

Yep...saw it, but Egan is always fun to re-read.

I read that book in 5th grade and also bought a TR3 when I was 19 (that was *after* I bought the MGA, the Hillman, the Austin A40, etc.)

I bought a copy of The Red Car last Christmas (from Amazon) for myself. Linda had fun watching me read it.
You *can* go home again! :yesnod:

I've mentioned it here before, but I cut my teeth on The Red Car in 1961, when I bought my Scholastic Book Services copy, and read it countless times. Few years ago, I decided to hunt down another, and found one exactly like the paperback I had back then. Read it several times since, and it never gets old!

That and the "Black Tiger" series, by Patrick O'Connor fed me in so many ways. No telling how many people those guys touched with their little books...

I've never read that one, but I always get a little tear in my eye when the man in the yellow hat drives off in his red car as george waves furiously from the window.

Fantastic book, but if you haven't read it yet, read it BEFORE you read Egan's article. It's best to read the book without knowing the whole story first, and Egan's article lays out the whole plot.

I also can never figure out why people think it's so rare. I've bought two of them brand new online in the past couple years. You can buy a pile of them new through Amazon.

Egan has my cudos. I've followed his Jaguar exploits and more as long as he's been writing.

But I have to say the book he references is other than the one ~I~ remember.

A "Scholastic Books" title called: "the Red, Red Roadster" was the pivotal novel in MY background. An Alfa Romeo driven by the librarian.
