Pertronix

Continuing my quest to cure a slight miss at anything over 2500 RPM. I have replaced and tuned everything and now we are down to the Pertronix.
Before I replace it with my points, I thought I'd ask if anyone has had this (or other) problems with these units?

Hi radibob,

I really doubt it is the Pertronix. I think it would either work or not work at all rpm's.

Could be a valve or weak valve spring, or even a worn cam lobe. The reason I mention these things is that I went down a similar road with my TR6.

Be sure the little wire on the unit isn't rubbing against the points cam.

I've had my Pertronix for 6+ years with no trouble.
I still carry the points with me, but so far, no need for them.

I have a Crane ignition, not a Pertronix, so sorry in advance if this doesn't make sense. But I've noticed that it is extremely easy for the wiring in the Crane to restrict vacuum or centrifugal advance, if it's not installed with care. So, if there is such possibility with the Pertronix, it might be worth checking. I can't imagine any type of failure where it would work at idle but not at 2500 rpm.

What carb do you have?

Well, a Pertronix either works correctly or it doesn't work at all...so, I'd look someplace else.

Can you describe the miss? Does it occur while accelerating, or at cruise?

Have you used a timing light to see how steady your timing is?

Have you checked plug color?

Run the car in the dark and open the hood to see if there is any arcing?

Run it without the vacuum advance?

Oh... and how much timing do you have at 1000 rpm?

Thanks for all the input. The miss occurs when I rev the engine up with the car stationary, crackling and popping start right at 2500 and gets worse to 3000.
At speed you feel it at the same RPM but a little less since i think the car's momentum mitigates it somewhat.
I checked the rockers last night and they are all at spec.

What I am wondering is whether the valves may be floating a bit. This is a head that was rebuilt with new guides and valves and rockers etc. so I wonder if its a bit stiff. I only have maybe 100 miles on it since the rebuild. What makes me wonder this is that once when the engine got hot (like 190) in traffic it seemed to reduce the mis fire a bit.

Maybe I'll dose it wiith some Marvel Mystery oil.

Cracking and popping? Does it sound like a backfire? If so, is it out the carb or the tailpipe?

While driving the car when this starts, does it feel like your car is surging forward and back or does it feel like you've hit a wall and can't rev past 2500 or 3000?
