Performance Experiment, Will it work?

Have a brand new Cannon Intake Manifold
lying around here in a box for a Weber Side draft.

I have a box of Mikuni Carbs, soooooo

I got to thinking, instead of a Weber Side draft.

What about using 2 Mikuni 40MM carbs.
I like the simplicity of the Mikuni's
and have been using them all my life on
my vintage dirt bikes, and in examining the
intake, looks as if it would be pretty neat
if it works.

It is getting time to use all this stuff that
I have been collecting for a special engine,
I do have a Weber Downdraft Carb and Manifold,
but have always respected the dual SU's.
Aluminum head, and headers. but I thnk that
the Mikuni's would work if they are big enough.

Any thoughts??

I think it would be awesome. They seem like really good carbs and even simpler than SUs. There are a number of guys who run bike carbs on their LBCs that I see at British Car Day. One Spitfire in particular runs four. Probably overkill in terms of carburation but man does it look cool!

There's a guy out West, who uses motorcycles carbs on Triumphs, but he has a custom direct shot intake.

The stock SUs are still the best bet if your engine is relatively stock.

The downdraft Weber is a non-starter and belongs in an Italian econobox - a definite step backward.

The sidedraft Webers are used mostly for show on the street and bring with them a lot of tuning woes until you get it right (which is often never as most people don't know how to tune them). I only use them on my track cars.

The Mikunis are excellent carbs with good accurate metering and I'm sure they work very well on an MG motor, but it is sort of like coming up with an answer to a question no one asked. If the engine is stock, it won't make enough difference to bother with. For an all out race engine it would be very interesting. Unfortunately in most racing organizations it would also be illegal.

If you want an SU solution, these carbs that I once used on a Triumph might attract you - except that you couldn't find them and if you did they'd be too expensive to consider!

think I'll list it on Ebay, just to eliminate
some stock here in the garage.

I always liked the SU's,
and grew up with Mikuni's,
I like their simplicity.

I HAVE ONE OF THESE! It was on the 79 I had. It's now used as a door stop. Took a while before I found a <span style="text-decoration: underline">good use</span> for it! PJ

People buy these econo car downdrafts because they need something that fits between the servo and engine and because they want some Walter Mittyish basking in the referred glory of the Weber name, pretending that all of the carbs they make are made for performance. T'aint so.

No, Weber made all sorts of carbs for all sorts of applications, as do most carb companies, and some were workaday runabout carbs and some were performance. It just seems that in North America, the brand name is only associated with the performance stuff for some reason.

PS - I keep 8 side draft Webers in use!

Ive said it before, but: if I could figger a way to reliably pump diesel fuel thru 'em, ALL the cars here would be on 'em. :wink:
