Pebble Beach Concours

The owner has quite a large collection of RR & Bentley cars as well, but that is one of the most elegant cars I have ever seen. He entered a yellow London to Edinburgh Rolls a few years back.

You mean this one?. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I wonder if those cars ever drive farther than on & off the viewing stage?

There is the "rolling concours" that is part of the event, where many of the cars do take a long drive. At least they are required to run across the stage to win, that's something, at least.

Well Tony, considering that this is the only one in this whole wide world I would be scared to death to drive it any farther if it were mine.--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

About two dozen cars that show at Pebble start here in Kirkland and tour for over a week down to the show. My father organizes the "send-off" party each year at Suite 200 auto club.

I didn't attend the party this year, but last year a couple Duesenbergs, a Chrysler Ghia, a couple Lincolns, a Hispano-Suiza, an Austin Nippy, and the winner of the first Le Mans (a '23 Bentley) all were on the tour.

There's a big move away from the choking, sputtering non-running concours cars. These cars deserve to be driven, and I've always had mucho respect for guys like Jay Leno (and less wealthy collectors like my buddy Dennis Karras who owns a GT350 and GT500) who restore to 100 points then drive 'em!

I like Jay Leno's philosphy on that. Restore them to 100 points and drive them back down to 80.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif ..& then have your staff of full-time restorers bring her back up to 100 points so you can do it again!

Yeah but it's still pretty cool that some of these rich folks beat on their cars instead of just polishing them.
I've seen Tony and Lulu Wang absolutely thrash their Ferraris and Maseratis at Lime Rock (including a multi-million dollar GTO). This is why I love vintage racing. Great stuff!

You know it just depends how much money you have, with millions and millions a good thrash in your million dollar car is not too bad an investment maybe.

And Jay Leno does get his hands dirty by all accounts. He just has lots of professional help. Hehe. isn't that as it should be?

Just as a note: the Daimler's 23" rims needed tires, what do you do when no one makes them anymore? You have Coker make you five!

I love Tony's yellow 250TR...haven't seen it in a while, though. He used to race it at the Northwest Historics.

My feeling is: why have a car if you aren't going to drive it? If I don't like driving a car for one reason or another, I sell it and get something I do like and feel comfortable driving.

Wow, that is a great statement. I agree fully!

Hey, they also made 5 for my wife's '73 Bug! The thin whitewall Goodyears that came on it new are no longer available....Coker made me 5 - took about 6 weeks.

I remember a journalist talking about meeting Leno.
He said that he forgot that he was this big TV personality-
-he just thought of him as a "car guy".
I aso have a quote of Leno's, taped to my filing cabinet - it says:
"It is cheaper to have 35 cars and one woman, than to have one car,and 35 women".
