Pawn Stars

I'll be certain to NEVER watch that once they get it on. However, I do look forward to the posts here about how it's nothing like the original, how it's too politically correct and how none of the hosts are up to the standards set by Clarkson, Hammond and Captain Slow....

Just another great British show ruined by the Yanks, like Alf and the Family & Steptoe and Son in the old days, and The Office in modern times. Can you imagine what they would have done to Monty Python? The Horror......!

I'll watch it and see what it is like. If they just take the basic premise and Americanize it, then it may work. But if they just try to copy the BBC Top Gear format, then it will likely fail.

Was just thinking that Jay Leno would make the perfect Top Gear America host

I was laid up at home recovering from some minor surgery earlier this week (let's just say the Sprite isn't the only thing in the house that needed work on its tailpipe) and this episode came on. I let out a yell like a kid on Christmas morning when I saw a square sprite on TV. "Hey, hun...come look, my car is on TV!" (well a decent facsimile of the the car. I'd like to think my '69 Mark IV is a bit nicer). 5k cash? Not too bad of a deal.

And yes...this isn't reality. This is scripted reality. We once had an episode of Georgetown Cupcakes filmed at our location. When I was showing the facility around to the production people, they asked for where the kitchen was. I showed that it was on the same level as the main room. Instead, they thought it would make better TV if the "reveal" occurred while trying to come down a dark and narrow staircase from our loft.

Given the two "flipping" shows that I watch: Counting Cars and Fast & Loud, I seem to prefer Counting Cars. Danny Koker seems to come across as more genuine than the guy from Fast & Loud. Haven't met either one...that's just they way they seem to come across on TV.

The American Top Gear would seem better if we didn't have the original to compare it to, all things are relative, they try to do some fun things, but it just doesn't come off the same. But most of us are probably in the closet or out of the closet anglophiles here, and that is part of why we like British cars. I finally saw the Sprite episode of Pawnstars, yes it is way far fetched, how does he know it needs a rebuild, and then the price he quotes? if they really wanted to flip for a profit they would find a good used 1275 and put it in. I assume the powers that be said "lets do a "Rick makes a mistake" episode", so they took the Sprite with issues and ran with it. But then it makes me wonder if all the stuff they say about guns and war memorabilia and such, which I assume is right and I am learning something (because I don't know any better), is sometimes as hokey as the Sprite story. Funny I was talking to a friend about Pawnstars and Pickers, he said he didn't like Pickers cause it seems like they rip people off, I feel like Pawnstars is more the rip people off show (off course I understand that the seller doesn't have any obligation to take what is offered, so "rip-off" may be a little strong. They never seem to offer more than half of appraised value, I can understand why they won't pay more than $50 for $100 dollar item to cover overhead and such, but they seem to follow the same rule when it is a $10,000 item, and they won't go past half or so of appraised value, of course I don't understand why the person with the $10,000 item sells it to them for $5,000 either, in this day and age there are plenty of venues to dispose of collectibles in a reasonably short time.
