What could POSSIBLY go wrong??

We bell-trained our dogs (ring to be let out, ring to be let back in). I work from home. I soon learned my choices: Get up and open the door every 20 minutes, or leave the door open all day.

The worst part is, the one dog doesn't necessarily want to BE outside, she just wants to be in control of the door. If I tell her she has to stay in for a bit (e.g., lawn guy is working in the back yard), she will give the bells one last exasperated ring and lie down (accompanied by a big, sullen-teen-girl SIGH).

I can only imagine the things she'd say to me over the phone.
 
Don’t forget to stop on the way home and pickup some doggie treats.
 
I can just imagine getting a phone call every five minutes while I'm at work because my dogs are wanting to know when I'll be home.

... and (I know nobody asked but) the other one will sit and look out the sliding glass door watching the backyard and will occasionally, very gently and gingerly, give the bell a very smol ring. She doesn't want to go outside, I think she just thinks it's a "Like" button.

"Hey Daddy, look at that. doesn't that sunny spot look nice?"
 
Yup! The guys here are "occasional" felines. They do NOT want to be indoors for anything but the food and occasionally, the affection. But we had a day or two of lower than usual temps recently, so apparently it ain't that bad indoors just now.

Our only remaining kitty, a Russian blue, is strictly an indoor cat. Around here, outdoor cats don't last long thanks to hawks and coyotes. In fact "Blue" was a cat that used to show up on our porch for a while, then one winter morning, it was so cold that she was begging to come in. We opened the door, she ran in and has been here ever since.
