Paul A. Gasket?

The shop that is doing my engine swop called me yesterday and asked if I had a source for the "special" gasket that Paul A. had put between the engine and the backing plate. They had never seen one like it, and WANT one. Both Gerard and Bill M. say there is usually nothing special about the gasket and the standard 1275 gasket will work just fine.

Still, does anyone know of a thicker gasket or one of "special" shape or material? I'm not sure what makes this particular one so very different that they want a source, but I have a hunch that Paul was having them punched out at some small local shop, just for him. If so, the knowledge went with him.

They should have made a pressing or a mold of it so they could make copies.
Paul had a lot of the "special sauce" that it takes to make all these little cars go.

Bill,

All I can say is I bought more than a half dozen of Paul's kit's over the years since 2000 (as well as several of the Morris kits for the complete engine and gearbox swaps) and never saw anything unusual in the way of a rear gasket. The purchases were made from 2000 to right up to a few weeks before his 1st stroke, so they span a long period of time.

I've also purchased a quite a few over the last couple years, from both a UK supplier and Moss and I never get the same product twice. Some, are the beige color, some are black, but they are all between .026 and .030 thickness. All are uniform in terms of the shape, but the black ones will give the impression of being thicker or more substantial as the may be .001-,002 thicker, but don't find there is much difference otherwise.

What did you find when you removed the plate for the engine swap?
