Patch or repair?

Picture #1, a TR3 saunters into a bar and asks are these stools taken?

The sandblasting removed a bunch of all-metal leaving a nasty looking inner front fender/body mount. Apparently water gets between the sandwiched pieces of metal and rusts from the inside. So I cut it out and welded in one piece. I welded it front and back, so it looks better when looking from inside the fender well. So, is this a 'patch' or a 'repair'?

Since it is a replacement of metal I would call it a repair... a patch sounds much cruded and could merely cover the area.

Nice work... lame joke.

Mine did not have that sandwich...it may be a previous "patch". But I agree, you have made it a repair that looks great!

Hi Tex,

Funny how these rust out in the same places

Here are some shots of my repair. Sandwich is right!

On the inside is the bracket that mounts the body to the frame at the front.

Hi JP,

I took measurements on the rear side of the patch before I made the cut. Also, for reference, the verticle cutline at the rear is the verticle leading edge of the body mount.

Moving to the opposite corner, the body mount at the rear of the car is also a sandwiched area to the spare tire well. For some reason, I thought the sandblaster and primer would make these issues just go away. I ignored the 'bubbled' look, and hoped 'it will be ok'. When it came back with holes blown through, I had to re-evaluate 'ok', and postponed doing anything for as long as possible.

The rear area is so small, it's hard to get something as small as a dremel in there. I welded the crack first. My welding is terrible (I can almost hear my neighbor saying 'you're just globbing it on there') but my grinding makes up for it. Welding rust is like trying to weld a sparkler. I cut out as much as I could and then cut new steel to weld in, on the spare tire side, and finally welded the holes shut on the outside.
