I just got a parts washer for Christmas (thanks wifey). I have always wanted one, could have used it daily a couple years ago when I was in the middle of my TR250 restoration, I am sure I will still find it useful.

What is a good reasonably priced solvent to use (keep in mind I am cheap!) I know sometimes people have good suggestions for common chemicals rather than "Parts Cleaner Solvent".

I use diesel- (relatively) cheap and very low burn issue.
10 gallons in my 20 gallon HF cleaning tank lasts about 2 years (if you keep the lid closed when you are not using it)
Cleans very well.

I just use mineral spirits - whatever is cheapest at the store. still about $7 a gallon but it lasts
 
We have a 5 gallon bucket of Purple Power in our washer. Works pretty good, biodegradeble.
 
I've never tried it, but did someone once say that Purple Power can be a bit harsh on aluminum and stainless steel?
 
I tried the Purple Power on aluminum Paul and it gives the finish a dark black coating. You can wash it off, but it looks like it needs to be cleaned again.... you are correct, not good on aluminum.
 
But I guess that it's good on plain old cast iron and steel? I don't think that the engine parts would be hurt by it, but the carbs and T/A's not so good.
 
Castrol makes a great parts washer fluid I have been using for years 5 gallon pail, cleans off easily with water{no residue}lasts a long long time and casts about $60. Usually need about 10 gallons. Not cheap,but real washer fluid and safe.Parts stores usually have to order it.
 
Bought my solvent at the local Tractor Supply Center. About $30 for a 5 gal bucket. My washer took 2 buckets. It's a mineral spirit based solvent.
 
Purple power can be used full strength to soak carb parts in for a very short time, but must be rinsed immediately with water after exposing to the air. I've used it many times with good results and the carb bodies look like new. Make sure you buy the true Purple Power, not a look-a-like, they react a little differently. Do not get it on your hands! PJ

NOW, I personally use mineral spirits in my washer as it's less destructive on the hands than Purple Power, doesn't smell bad like diesel fuel and cleans better. Diesel has oil in it and if you want a part very clean, you have to wash the part over in an true cleaning agent. Very delicate parts I wash in hot soapy water using Dawn as a cleaning agent. PJ
 
Mineral spirits here, and dish-washing liquid as Paul says, for "delicates".

The best "official" parts cleaner liquid I've used was Stoddard Solvent. Too pricey and flammable but it works great.
 
Then ya chuck it the dishwasher when the wife is away.
