Parts Replacement Schedule

Andy- I have what I have.
No desire to put a Toyota engine and drive trane in the car.

But I admit to concepting putting a Merc 150 hp, 4-stroke
marine powerplant -into the beast just for fun.

putting a supra motor in it is not putting a tr6 badge on a supra. it still looks like a tr6 right? it still handles like a tr6. it just has some balls, unlike a tr6. and you can argue all you want, the tr6 motor is a tractor engine, bottom line. you can lie to yourself but dont try and lie to me. even a souped up tr6 motor is going to have marginally less umph then a stock supra motor. and be less rev happy, and less easy to repair and blah blah blah. the stock tr6 driveline sucks and is not suited to a sports car. i guess some people just dont like gutless crap motors in their sports cars, thats all.

also, why a merc motor? its just like the tr6 engine. ohv pushrod, only a 4 cyl but huge displacement so not very revvy. the supra motor is 2.5l, i6, dohc, very very revvy, and about the same size as the tr6 motor. its also based of a jaguar mill... and the transmission is what you guys use in the HVDA kit. why not save yourself some money and swap the whole motor and drivetrain?
have a great day!

I ain’t no auto mechanic but one thing that everyone has failed to mention which, if left unattended can have dire consequences are the fish’ in worms in your boot. They should be renewed at least every other week depending on heat and usage. The Folgers can changed annually or as desired.

Really? What tractor ever had a TR6 engine ???

in basic design? a lot. but if you dont want to see it for what it is, thats cool. do you know why the motor is unfavorable (from a sports car standpoint, and reliability standpoint)?

Jussie-

The 150 HP. Merc Optimax, V-6, hybrid 4 stroke/2.5 liter
engine makes 5900 rpm, weighs in at only 400 pounds
and is water cooled and can run all day at redline.

Could you even imagine such a powerplant in a TR6??
If I wasn't so down and out busted broke from three years
of TR6 repairs/replacements - I'd do one just for fun.

I've already got the Tee-top and marlin outriggers
worked out.

i wouldent put that in my car. 400 lbs is a lot. 150hp is not a lot. v6's are wide, and most boat engines have a special watercooling setup. plus what trans would you use? there are many better choices out there that are easier to fit, weigh less, make more power, and are probably cheaper. (like the supra motor :D)

<span style="color: #990000">Poolboy-

and just think. you could have solved it all and made a huge upgrade with a 600 dollar supra motor/trans/harness/ecu and a little welding. and poolboy, before you ask why i havent done it... i have been waiting to save up for a more expensive, but much better motor.

jussie, if you dont like these cars why do you still own one and go to forums to argue with older people who do like them? just sell it and get a supra

because if i wanted a supra i would have bought one. i wanted a british roadster, cos they look cool and unique. i didnt realize the tr6 was such a turd before i got it, and i figured it had the aftermarket of the MGB. i was wrong, and now i am trying to make lemonade out of a lemon. its been a pain in the butt, but i am close. I love the style of my car, and the simple interior, and how small and cute it is.

I've also put a ton of money into the thing, and i wont get it back. you wanna buy a tr6 that doesnt look good but has a SOLID motor, trans, frame and suspension? probably not, because no one who buys a tr6 cares what kind of condition that stuff is in... all they want is shiny paint, a body that has no rust, and that all the parts are ORIGINAL

Don't look at me, Dale.
I know what the chances of that are.

<span style="color: #990000">Poolbuy- you know the great effort and huge expense
I have made to get an operational 1969ish TR6 and the gobs and gobs
of help I found here on the BCF.

Sure, I hate DFPO Pedro for his con job and I'd shoot him dead
in a NY minute if it was legal. But I also take great pride that
with help from new friends, I have a mostly streetable TR6
that folks seem to enjoy seeing.

Don't need no hybrid TR6/Toyota.

And if I want to go REALLY fast at high RPM?
A 20 minute drive down to the marina and me and Tres Gatos
are up on plane with only the prop in the water.

I enjoy my TR6 the 2 or 3 months a year, when it's NOT broke down.
I hate DFPO Pedro every waking hour.

Uh...for the record, the TR6 engine has absolutely NO relationship to a "tractor" engine. That's a half-truth that relates to the wet-liner four-cylinder used in the TR2-4, an engine originally developed for the Standard Vanguard but soon also developed for the Standard-built Ferguson tractor. The six has its origins in the 803cc four-cylinder introduced for the Standard 8 saloon in 1953.

Fact is, pretty much all the classic British roadsters were stuck (if you will) with long-stroke engines derived from family cars. Of course, cars such as Jaguars beginning with the XK-120 are notable exceptions, but that's an entirely different class of car.

That particular topic aside, I really don't understand your blanket condemnation of the TR6 and their owners past and present. If you think the basic car looks cool but is better for you with a more modern drivetrain, etc., that's cool. No different than thousands of folks over the years who love the basic look of a Model A Ford roadster or any other car but customize the look and/or stuff in big-block Chevy or other engines, etc. It's called hot-rodding. But to arbitrarily state that the basic car sucked then and still does now, and that nothing can be done with any parts available to make and keep it a functional "stock" car? Utter nonsense, and you know it, and pretty much everyone else in the hobby knows it.

Are there bad reproduction parts out there today? Absolutely! Are there good reproduction parts out there today? Absolutely! Same goes with original parts v. aftermarket replacement parts back when the cars were new, but to a much lesser degree. Back then, the parts market might well have been supporting 50,000-60,000 extant TRs (and other cars that share various parts). Now? I dunno, maybe 10,000-15,000 still exist, if that? Economically, a less viable market, but ultimately (I hope) a more discriminating one that won't long tolerate poor quality.

My bottom line? I don't think anyone is "wrong" here for what they like in their cars and in what they do to their cars to keep enjoying him...except YOU, apparently convinced that all the rest of us are fools.

GIVE IT A REST, OK?

SHEESH!!!
