what are theholes in the rear shelf on either side of the diff hump. Or is that an artifact of the picture and glare.

Two for the dual circuit brakes (required for racing in most clubs) and one for the clutch.

In the write up he describes how they were for modified spring hanger mounts, that he has since put back to normal.
 
Actually check out that blog some more - the front hanger mounts potruded right into the cockpit, immediately behind the seats - looks like he did a nice job in fixing them back up.
