Part time overdrive

Just put a "rebuilt" D-type in a 63 B. As long as I don't drive longer than 15 minutes, the OD engages perfectly, but 15 minutes ain't far in Atlanta. After 15 minutes of running, the solenoid engages but the OD hunts between engaging and not. With no throttle, the RPMs come down but with throttle, they go back up (as if the clutch is slipping). I've been told to remove a "spring, ball and hollow pin) from the top of the unit and clean out a hole on the side of the tube. Is this feasibly the problem. Need to be relatively sure since I have to pull the power plant. Help, I want my OD back.

Had the same problem. This was the fix...

Remove the solenoid cover plate (the one with the transmission info on it)

Remove the solenoid, plunger and ball bearing.

Clean off the bearing.

Place a dab of grease on a punch and stick the bearing to it.

Gently tap the bearing into place with a hammer to seat it.

Replace the other parts, renew the cover gasket and put the cover back on.

That should fix the problem. I couldn't keep the bearing in place, so after I tapped the bearing in place with the punch and hammer and it fell back out, I stuck it with a dab of grease to the plunger itself for reassembly. Good luck!

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif BINGO!

Thirded... poor seat onna "ball". Most times )in my experience) it's been a bit of corrosion at the seat. Does the car sit for extended periods?

Considering it's been around for about... what 35-40 years?... I'd say at many time in the past it has sat for "extended periods". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So long as we're on the subject, oil is supposed to leak out when you remove the solenoid cover, right? In other words, the ball isn't really supposed to seal the thing?
