Jim, when I was there in the late 70s we didn't have Google Earth to help. Had to rely on paper road maps. Sure enough now that we have satalite photos there it is right in the absolute middle of nowhere. You can even see the canals to transport the larger items by barge. Wow, and all this time I was thinking black ops base or such.

I've sen those planes too and thought, " what the h--l are they doin' way out here?". You're right, looks like they're landing in the middle of the woods.

I was drving down Tchoupitoulas St when I lived in N.O directly after 9/11 at night. There was a spec ops chopper hovering over a three story building that I was passing. ( black w/ no lights on it anywhere)

Guys started repelling out of it w/ weapons. As quick as they were down they went back up again and flew over to another building and did it again.

It was really strange to have somehting like that happen DIRECTLY over you. Looking through the sunroof, it appeared they were going to drop right into the car.

Too bad no one has picked up on the Ignatius Reilly thing. Classic tragic comedy work, that.
I picked up on it, Mickey....was waiting for you guys who were binging back & forth...remember, we discussed it in N'Awlins.

Tony, I think he meant picked up where ole boy left off.

Folks wanted to, but his mother wouldn't sign off on any deals. She was approched by several people wanting to write another book, movie deals, the whole works.

I don't know what's more tragic, ole boy wacking himself cause his work wasn't accepted, or his mother killing it from any further development or exposer. She was offered full control of any projects and could kill them at will if she wasn't happy with them and she still said no. Local PBS station did a special on it a while back and it aires from time to time.

The station is WYES in N.O if you want to search their site. They have back episodes. You might be able to find it. I think "mom" might be dead now too.

There was/is a statue of Ignatius in front of the old D.H Homes building on Canal St, but that's as far as it went. ( I'm pretty sure it's in front of DH Homes but not sure.)

Ah - well, if I'm that dense, it wouldn't be me..after Katrina, I drove the length of Canal from river out to Mid-City showing Jerri the area....don't remember seeing statue but it could be there.....also, don't remember exactly where Holmes building is....how close to the Krauss building? Same side or other side of neutral ground?

don't know, like the song says, "aint der no more".

I think they took the statue down for some reason but might have put it back up by now.

neutral ground aint "neutral" anymore. The street car ate it all up.
( I know that's not why they called it that, but it's all gone...again anyway).

Who knows, durring the looting it might have been melted down and made into teeth. :jester: ( statue, not neutral ground)

here it is: ( statue)

here's another bit of useless trivia for those who don't know. Canal St is the widest street in the world. They say it's the widest thouroughfare in the world, but that would include highways and I think they might have highways bigger elsewherein the country...like in CA. (I watch too much local PBS.)

One things for sure, it's big.
