I just got my car back from the shop and it runs smooooooth! Very enjoyable to drive! My wallet is much lighter too, so that should help with gas mileage!
Originally, I brought the car in for a "tune up" since it was running a little sputtery and gurgely (at lower RPMs especially). I thought mostly I was going to need the carbs tuned a little bit. It turned out there was minimal compression in cylinders 1 and 2 due to a blown head gasket. So, new head gasket was needed and when the head was off they could see that many of the exhaust valves were burned (I saw them and was amazed at how bad they were! They were splitting around the edges) So the head went to a machine shop. They also noticed that my radiator was leaking and and needed re-coring and essentially fell apart when they removed it. Also, the carbs were leaking oil due to worn out rubber or gaskets or whatever God makes carb parts out of. Finally, the icing on the cake was when my hood got dented- the mechanic went to remove the keys from the ignition and due to a glitch in my ignition switch that causes the starter motor to engage when the keys are turned past the off position, the car lurched forward with the hood up and hit another car. And the sprinkles on the icing on the cake was when the turn signal switch got broken (partially my fault because I inadvertently installed my steering wheel backwards right before I brought the car to the shop and when the mechanic turned the wheel his big hands caught on the switch).
Moral of the story: um...not sure, except there's always SOMETHING that needs repairs! Oh, and the ghost of Pedro is alive and well in the mainland. I can hear him rattling chains in the carport as I write.....
