Pancake air filter Gripe and Question

After several attempts to mount some repro pancake air filters from VB, I ended up putting the original pancakes back on. Several issues: the threading in the nuts mounted in the filters appears to be off, and one of the nuts was mis-aligned (not normal to the back plane of the filter). Also, the bolts that are supposed to fit (also VB) were about 1/4" too long. They can be cut, but why send a part that has to be modified?

Ok, got that out of my system. VB has been great over the years, I guess I should give them a call and discuss with them.

Not sure how much this design filters the air anyway. Dust can pass through the fibers. Is there a treatment anyone would suggest for making the originals more effective without changing their appearance (drastically)?

Just got off the phone with VB. They are always helpful and try to do the right thing for their customers, IMHO.

I've been asked to take some measurements off the parts in question and they will see what can be done about replacement/refund. I should mention that I let the parts sit for almost 4 years before trying to mount them...

Lesson learned: always check your parts for defects immediately after receipt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

I'm not familiar with the filters that VB sells. Are these similar to the K&N filters others sell for the HS2s? If so, the fibers are typically treated with an oil to improve their ability to catch dust. There are also special kits to wash and recondition the filters. Never blow them with compressed air to clean them as the high-velocity air opens up big gaps between the fibers.

Maybe my description was off. These are the round, slightly domed filters with wire grill covered air intake over most of the domed area. Supposedly original-style Bugeye parts. Not like the K&N which have the air intake around the circumference. The fibers on the old and new parts are already very spread out = they might stop something greater than 1/16 inch or so.

I'll look into the oil bit. Thanks.
