Well let me tell you I am glad that it is done. What a chore! It looks better in real life than it does in the pics. Once I sand it and wax it, it will look even better still. My goal was to have car that looks okay at 20 feet. (Before I painted, my car was looking kinda bad on Google Earth.) I feel like I succeeded in that endeavor. I think the rally stripes are going to really bring the look home. I know flat black is not to everyone's taste, but it makes me happy. The amount of body and prep work needed to give it a "real" paint job is beyond my skill, patience, time and budget right now. This paint job should keep the car from rusting out from under me while I drive the crap out of it for the next 5 years or so until such time as I can pay someone else to paint the car for me.

I don't understand the part about sanding and waxing? isn't that flat paint gloss. I tried the link to strips but failed.

If that is a flat or satin paint choose a color of striping that is vibrant, and stripe the wheels same color.When you wash the car add a 1/2 cup of fuel oil to improve gloss if wanted

Interesting idea... I am little worried about getting fuel oil on lawn... would kerosene work? (not that that is any better for my lawn)

I have some environmentally friendly oil soap for my floors... I wonder if that would work...

Oh and I am not as interested in gloss as I am uniformity and deep blackness.
 
I've seen guys use WD-40 on old black hot rods. I have no idea if it is a good idea or not.

Funny... I thought of that too after I got a little on the paint while re-assembling the doors.
 
I know guys riding barn-find motorcycles who carry a rag wet with WD in a plastic bag to give the dull paint a nice glow when they stop at a hangout. Ditto the rat rodders with the primer paint jobs.
 
I love that idea... but I am not so hot on the smell of WD.
 
Nice work, and I am a fan of that muffler - it has a nice sound to it.
I decided however to replace mine with a single Harley muffler.
I didn't really think it would sound so much deeper than the quad muffler but it sure does. I've got the 2 footer Screaming Eagle on mine, from Bill L. (Pythias).
Anyway, keep the pictures coming - it will be interesting to see how it shines up and the stripes will definitely add a lot.

Use armor all or a tire dressing for a paint shine enhancer. Don't use anything petroleum based as it may start to remove your rattle can paint when it gets hot.

BTW, looks great especially seeing you used an air ratchet to paint it. :jester:

Mine looks like it was painted with a hammer...literaly! :hammer:

If you like wintergreen you could use Marvel Mystery Oil.
 
You should really put some kind of sealer on it. Most ordinary primers DO NOT protect from rusting. Bob
 
Kim... you are right! I DO need some of Hap's new wheels.

The flat is not primer. It's heavy duty Rustoleum.
 
Can the kids write on it in chalk? economical way to get stripes. Looks like you had quite an adventure!!

I have actually thought of that. The wife has lots of artist friends. That could be pretty cool.
 
I had a friend who invited all her artist friends over and let them paint on her black Honda Civic. It came out pretty good.
