I'm considering stripping and repainting my original Lucas TR3 starter. Does anyone know if the starter was originally painted the same color as the car or simply black. If black was it flat or gloss ? Would I need to prime it ? Also, should I use high temperature paint ? Thanks.

If you would take it to a shop for a rebuild, they would simply paint. It with a standard gloss black. Temperature should not be a problem.

TRA judging standards call for the motor casing to be painted "matte black". The standard doesn't specify, but I believe the alloy end plate was originally left natural.

If you do paint the end plate, be aware that the little cover for the end of the shaft has vents built into it that may let paint get into the bearing area. I bought a "rebuilt" unit once that had blasting sand inside there!
