Paint work...is this the right idea?

I got to find me some sealer now. I am so out of touch with everything in the auto paint business. It seems laquer is the new r-12 refrigerant when it comes to being evil to the environment. Talked to the paint guy when I bought the black basecoat and he was telling me all about it. I have about ,lets see quart of paint and another of thinner $90, 2 prethinned quarts of etch primer $45, pint of black and another quart of thinner $40, Oh and speed clear and hardener $110, another gallon of thinner and quart of acetone and this wipe down stuff $30, 120 feet of 120 grit for the 14 long air sander(this is a super sander for flat surfaces but the doors seem to be the only place on the midget) $30, and at least $100 of different sanding discs and the sanders(harbor freight), two different guns $80, a gallon of bondo and some spot putty $30. Thats all I can think of for now, but I am in this job deep. Too much to risk on a screw up. I am going to buy some sealer and another quart of the yellow. I have been told a quart would do a midget, especially with an HVLP gun and this Alsa paints claim to fame is its coverage in two coats. I still need to think about that.

geez Kim, im feeling better about Rustoleum all the time!
also i noticed Meeks Lumber has Valspar that can be tinted to any color.....;) ......z

So I got done redoing hood and fenders on Bugsy my '68 Sprite last night. 4 coats applied so far and I think that's all I'm gonna do. Looks really great in the garage but after 3 coats things still looked thin in places or in the sunlight. Decided to go to a 4th coat. Rustoleum cut 60/40 Paint/Thinner seems best ratio for coverage vs. runs, flashes out real well and minimal tipping to smooth out air bubble from foam roller required after things start to flash off. Also Gloss Hunter Green is real close the the BRG on the car originally. Was only going to do the hood and fenders prior to making a color change to Dark Blue when I install the Bugeye bonnet. Moved onto doors last night as front half of car looked so good. Made decision to finish entire car in Gloss Hunter Green. Time to wait a few days and then wetsand with 600 and then 1500 paper. Keeping it green will eliminate the need to respray the engine compartment and all of the other hassle of doing that. Will need some Bondo work on back half of car to fix some nicks and paint chips. Metal work behind rear wheels will need to wait pending purchase of MIG welder.

Guys so far I'm like $38.00 into this entire project from an expense side and maybe 10-15 hours in paint and prep work. Rustoleum cut 60/40 is simple and easy to apply and easy to fix problems if you screw up. Foam rollers and brushes are cheap. Measure accurately when mixing paint and process/results are repeatable.Compared to what I started with this looks fabulous. Happy to post pics of results but not sure how to post directly to this forum.

Time to finish and get this one wrapped up. Got to get out and drive but glad to see Bugsy at least all green for the first time in 5+ years.

maybe a dumb question, but I don't know the answer so I'll ask. Can you spray the rustoleum mix?

For those that recommend a "system". Good advise. I think I'll save myself a lot of time and anguish from trying to create experience that I just don't have, and head down to the NAPA paint store and follow their directions. I don't know any other paint shops nearby, so NAPA it is.

Thanks again - Drew

yes, its just oil based enamel.....people are rolling it from the lack of spraying equipment or the cheapness of
the roller setup......zimmmy
