Does the vehicle number or chassis number give the actual color number? My 66 is supposed to be tartan red but it could be flame red. Some charts say only tartan red (rd9) was available in 66 others say flame red is also a 66 color.

No - numbers on MGB's don't contain paint info...you have to go by the paint codes offered by year.

Mike, this won't help your dilemma, but it will show you the colors on the cars. https://teglerizer.com/mgcolors/index.html

Addition to this post,.
Here's a breakdown of MGB Red colors,
Tartan Red 1962--1969
Flame Red 1970--1972
Blaze Red 1971--1975
Damask Red 1973--1977
Vermillion 1978--1980
Carmine 1978--1980

Hope this helps. PJ

I found the following link to be very helpful when I was trying to identify the color of my wife's '76 B:

MG Paint Colors & Years

The colors seemed much clearer than those that I found posted on other sources and it includes the codes from PPG and Dupont. Hope this helps.
