I read your comment in a previous thread about the trunnion outer washers not fitting well. I'm ready to do this install so was wondering in what manner they didnt fit well? Were they TRF washers? You wernt refering to the thrust washers were you? Cheers Karl

I get confused about terminology, so here's a diagram courtesy of Moss. What I was talking about was item 110. These washers have an inner collar that is supposed to deform to match the splines on the trunnion pin as you tighten the nut. (So the washer cannot turn on the pin in operation.) What I've heard from others is that the reproduction washers are much harder to deform than the originals were; and damage to the nut and/or pin ensues.

I'm not even certain the problem is the washers; could be that the splines on the pin don't have the same lead-in taper that the original ones did, which helped form the splines into the washer. But either way, reusing the old washers should solve the problem.

Thanks for the info. Thats what I like about this forum...I wouldnt have known about this potential problem otherwise. I've got a spare TR3 frame I can rob for washers and hopefully they are useable. P.S.It's starting to seem like most aftermarket parts have some kind of quality issue and it pays to keep an eye out for original parts if possible. I sure hope poor quality aircraft reproduction parts arent finding their way on to planes! Karl

I installed the new TRF washers in my front end rebuild recently -- without any issues. Everything squeezed together as it should, with no nut/spindle damage.
