Hi Andrew Just following up on what you said about the Spitfire engines in an earlier thread. Is the 1296 engine marked "FD" the 1969 MKIII with HS 4's? Are these engines hard to find? From what I've read the 1500 engines seem to be problematic and the one in the 75 Spit I have is finished anyway so I'd be looking for an earlier one. CK

"FD" is arguably better still, at least in "as originally built" terms. That's the early "small journal" 1296 and is NOT emissions controlled, so it still has the "really good" camshaft, etc.! It was the highest power-rated of any Spitfire engine in cars built for the US, at 75 hp. Note that these used SU HS2s (1.25"), not the HS4 (1.5") seen on home market 1500s. FD engines would be from start of Mk3 production through 1968; it was the 1969 "Federal" models that got the emissions-controlled "FE" engines.
