Is there a way to check for hoses pinching while running the vehicle( 1980 tr-7) Also, Bill are you suggesting that I
open the take the cap off the expansion tanks when the guage is @ 1/2 and insert a thermometer expecting about 180?

As mentioned before, not cheap but oh so handy:

Beats spending $600 or hours of fooling around only to find the sending unit is faulty.

The candy thermometer in the expansion tank may not give you an accurate idea of the coolant temp at the sending unit... that is the relevant temp if the sending unit &/or gauge is to be confirmed.

Thanks for your response. I noticed that @3/4 the upper radiator hoses were hot while the bottom rad hose was cool.
Again I put in a used radiator that was guaranteed. Thoughts?
My dilemna now is buying a $50 therm vs installing a sending unit for $20 What is the failure rate of the sending unit? I have had this car since the summer of 1997 and until this summer
I did not have any cooling issues. It ran virtuaaly maintainence free from 2002 thru 2004.
