overdrive solenoid question

I putting in a new overdrive solenoid and I have some basic questions:

1. should I lubricate the piston and sleeve before putting them together or leave them dry?

2. all of the diagrams show a rubber seal or bellows looking part around the piston just above where it mounts to the lever. It seems to cover the exposed portion of the piston. This rubber part did not come with the solenoid and seems to show N/A on the Moss catalog. The old one is long gone. do i need it?

thanks in advance!!!

Rich

I did not lubricate mine, and it works fine. I doubt that a small amount of graphite or other similar lubricant would hurt though.

I think you'll want to get that rubber boot. It serves to keep water and dirt from getting between the piston and the sleeve. I don't know if Moss has them, but I got one recently from Healey Surgeons.

You will definitely want to get that rubber boot. The first problem I had after I bought my BT7 new was apparently the boot was left off at the factory. The solenoid seized up.

thanks guys, I'll definitely pick one up while I've got the tunnel off.

I found out that my dash switch was bad in addition to the solenoid. Can't wait to get the overdrive working again!

If the rubber buffer that sits below the solenoid plunger is missing then replace that too as the solenoid travel is set by it.
